Butler responded from a doubleheader loss Saturday to take a 3-0 win against Horizon League rival Detroit Sunday afternoon in the series finale in Detroit. Freshman Nikki Naffziger went the distance for her 12th win and fifth shutout of the season. The offensive spark came from second baseman JoAnna Gonzalez. Butler improves to 18-21 and 6-4 in league play, while Detroit falls to 14-15 (5-3).
Naffziger fanned nine Titans and allowed just four hits in her seven innings of work. She improves to 12-9 on the season.
The Bulldogs did all their damage in the first two frames. Gonzalez led off the game with a double and scored on a two-bagger by freshman Jenny Jacobs with two outs. With two outs in the top of the second, Naffziger and senior Lynn Hohs put together back-to-back singles and scored on a Gonzalez double.
Gonzalez and Jacobs combined for four of the team's six hits. Each player had a pair of doubles. Jacobs' second double came with one out in the third and it was the last hit of the afternoon for the Bulldogs. Detroit pitcher Lindsay Roy (2-4) retired the last 14 batters of the game.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday in Indianapolis, hosting league foe UIC in a single game at 4 p.m.
