Freshman righthander Breanna Fisher tossed a complete-game four-hitter to lead Butler to a 5-3 victory over Loyola in the first game of a Horizon League doubleheader at Loyola Softball Park on Saturday (April 18). The host Ramblers responded with their own complete-game four-hitter in the nightcap and claimed a 1-0 decision.
Fisher was in complete control through five innings. She blanked the Ramblers on three hits and set the home team down in order in the first and third innings. The first-year Butler pitcher was nicked for a three-run home run in the sixth inning, but she retired the Ramblers in order in the seventh to record her 10th win over the season. Fisher had three strikeouts and four walks in the game.
Butler (19-23, 8-8 Horizon League) took a 2-0 lead on four hits in the fourth inning. Freshman Alyssa Coleman provided the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to leftfield. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Lauren McNulty sparked the rally with a two-run home run, the second of her career.
Senior Alex Boros, junior Bridget Paine and freshman Erin Falkenberry each had two hits in the game, and the Bulldogs had nine total hits off of Loyola pitchers Krista Crosson (9-7) and Hillary Payne.
The second game belonged to Loyola righthander Amy Solava. The junior pitcher blanked the Bulldogs on four hits, while recording her 11th win of the season. The Bulldogs had just one extra-base hit, a double by Coleman, and just one Butler runner reached third base.
Loyola (21-17, 9-5 HL) scored the game's only run in the third inning. Kristen Medrud came up with a two-out single to plate Stevie Bradich with the deciding tally. Butler starter Lauren Ott (6-7) gave up just seven hits in the game and blanked the Ramblers over the final three innings.
The two league foes will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 p.m. (CT).
