Visiting UIC used 16 hits to score a 12-0 win over Butler in five innings Tuesday afternoon in a Horizon League single-game contest at Butler Field in Indianapolis. Butler sophomore JoAnna Gonzalez was the Bulldogs' bright spot, going 2-for-3 at the plate to stretch her hitting streak to seven games. UIC improves to 31-21 (8-2 Horizon League) with the win, while Butler falls to 18-22 (6-5).
The Flames jumped on Butler starter Nikki Naffziger (12-10) for two runs in the top of the first inning, using two walks and a two-RBI double from Lauren Brennan. UIC followed with four runs in the top of the second to chase Naffziger.
For UIC, Brennan went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Brittany Dixon had three hits and two RBIs, while Cameron Astiazaran and Joyce Cathey each added two hits and two runs batted in. Junior Brittany McIntyre went all five innings in the circle for the Flames, allowing the Bulldogs just three hits to improve to 16-10 on the year.
Gonzalez had two of the Bulldogs' three hits (senior Lynn Hohs had the other) to stretch her hitting streak to seven contests. She's hitting an impressive .515 (17-33) over her last 10 games and has hits in nine of her last 13 trips to the plate.
The unusual mid-week league contest is the first of three games between the Bulldogs and Flames this season. The teams will meet in Chicago one week from today for a doubleheader. Butler's next contest is a Thursday doubleheader at Miami (Ohio). Live stats for those two games will be available at www.butlersports.com. The team hosts league foe UW-Green Bay this weekend at Butler Field.
