Bulldogs Fall In Horizon League Championship Opener

Righthander Anna Bluemel pitched a four-hit shutout to lead #6 seed Green Bay to a 6-0 victory over #7 Butler in the opening game of the 2008 Horizon League Softball Championship in Chicago, Ill., on Thursday (May 8). The Bulldogs will face #8 seed Youngstown State on Friday (May 9) in an elimination round game.

Bluemel had six strikeouts and walked just two in her complete-game performance. She retired the first eight batters she faced, before sophomore Melissa Shofroth broke up the no-hitter with a double to left-center field. The Green Bay pitcher then retired 13 of the final 18 batters she faced, while improving to 7-11 on the season.

The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff home run by Mollie Kaebisch. Green Bay added two more runs off of Butler starter Kristen Malinkey (5-12) in the third inning. A single run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth, all off of Butler senior Nikki Naffziger, completed Green Bay's scoring.

Junior Lindsay Schluge led the Bulldogs with a pair of hits off of Bluemel. Shofroth and freshman Erin Jackson had Butler's other two hits.

The Bulldogs will try to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament when they face Youngstown State at 9 a.m. (CT, 10 a.m. in Indianapolis). The Penguins fell in their opener to #5 seed UIC, 7-0.
