Righthander Anna Bluemel pitched a four-hit shutout to lead #6 seed Green Bay to a 6-0 victory over #7 Butler in the opening game of the 2008 Horizon League Softball Championship in Chicago, Ill., on Thursday (May 8). The Bulldogs will face #8 seed Youngstown State on Friday (May 9) in an elimination round game.
Bluemel had six strikeouts and walked just two in her complete-game performance. She retired the first eight batters she faced, before sophomore Melissa Shofroth broke up the no-hitter with a double to left-center field. The Green Bay pitcher then retired 13 of the final 18 batters she faced, while improving to 7-11 on the season.
The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff home run by Mollie Kaebisch. Green Bay added two more runs off of Butler starter Kristen Malinkey (5-12) in the third inning. A single run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth, all off of Butler senior Nikki Naffziger, completed Green Bay's scoring.
The Bulldogs will try to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament when they face Youngstown State at 9 a.m. (CT, 10 a.m. in Indianapolis). The Penguins fell in their opener to #5 seed UIC, 7-0.
