Jenny Jacobs and Erin Jackson sparked a nine-hit attack and Jennifer Chasteen turned in a complete game performance on the mound to lead Butler to a 3-1 victory over Youngstown State in an elimination game at the Horizon League Softball Championship in Chicago, Ill., on Friday (May 9). The Bulldogs will face Loyola in a second elimination game at 4 p.m. (CT) on Friday.
Jacobs broke up a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth inning with a double to centerfield. She drove in junior Alex Boros, who had singled with one out in the inning. The run was Butler's first in the championship.
The Bulldogs (17-28) boosted their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Lauren Ott started the rally with a one-out single. She reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Melissa Shofroth and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Amy Hyerczyk brought Ott home with a double to right-center field, and Hyerczyk then scored on a single by sophomore Jen Arriaga.
That run support was all that Chasteen needed. The sophomore righthander blanked the Penguins on two hits through five innings, before surrendering a run in the top of the sixth inning. Chasteen closed the decision by retiring the final three batters she faced in the seventh inning. She allowed just five hits in the game and struck out five batters, while recording her second win in six decisions this season.
Jacobs and Jackson each finished with a pair of hits to lead the Bulldogs' offense. Butler's nine hits were the third-most by a team through the first seven games of the tournament.
