Butler's softball team showed no signs of rust in its first 2007 fall competition. The Bulldogs returned to action after a three-month layoff with three consecutive victories at the IUPUI Tournament, held in Indianapolis on Saturday (Sept. 8). The second day of the tournament was cancelled because of overnight rain.
Head coach Jeanne Rayman's squad posted successive victories over St. Joseph's, 2-1, host IUPUI, 4-0, and St. Mary's of the Woods, 6-3, in the one-day event. Each game had a one hour and 15 minute time limit.
Senior Jennny Jacobs drove in both Butler runs in the Bulldogs' victory over St. Joseph's. Senior righthander Nikki Naffziger pitched all four innings for Butler and allowed just one run on one hit, while striking out five.
Jacobs also had a pair of RBI's in Butler's shutout of IUPUI. She was two for three in the game. Newcomers Lauren Ott and Kelli Hahn each added a pair of hits, while sophomore Jennifer Chasteen went the distance (five innings) on the mound. Chasteen allowed five hits and recorded three strikeouts.
In the final win, junior Lindsay Schluge had two hits, including a double, and drove in one run, while sophomore Samantha Meintz added a pair of hits and two runs scored. Sophomore Kristen Malinkey pitched the first four innings, while Naffziger threw the fifth and final frame.
Jacobs led the Bulldogs on the day with four hits and four RBI's in the three games.
The Bulldogs will host Indianapolis in a doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 15, before playing a single game at Indianapolis on Sunday, Sept. 16.
