Pitchers Nikki Naffziger and Kristen Malinkey hurled complete game shutouts and Butler captured three wins in a four-game weekend series with Indianapolis. The two squads played back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16.
Butler swept both ends of a doubleheader from the Greyhounds at the Butler Softball Field on Saturday. Naffziger set the tone in the opener with a two-hit, complete game shutout. She recorded 11 strikeouts in the contest and allowed just seven base runners in the seven-inning contest. Senior Jenny Jacobs sparked Butler's offense in the 5-0 win with a pair of hits and two runs batted in.
The Bulldogs completed the sweep with a strong offensive showing in the second game, 11-7. Butler scored seven runs in the second and third innings and then held on for the victory, behind the complete-game pitching of Malinkey. The Bulldogs posted nine hits in the game, including doubles by junior Lindsay Schluge and sophomore Bridget Paine.
Indianapolis won the first game of the Sunday twinbill on its home field, 5-1. Naffziger took the loss and freshman Lauren Ott drove in the lone Butler run.
In the nightcap, Malinkey led Butler to a 3-0 decision. The second-year righthander went the distance, allowing six his and recording four strikeouts. Junior Alex Boros drove in two runs with a first-inning single, while senior Amy Hyerczyk had the other RBI with a double. Junior Annie Dolan paced the Bulldogs with three hits, including a double.
