NORMAL, ILL. - Four Bulldogs reaching the semifinals in the top three flights and senior Becky Jenkins winning the B flight title highlighted play for the Butler women's tennis team at the Illinois State recently. BU's Brittany Farmer placed second in the C singles flight and Molly Casperson finished 3rd in the A flight.
"We had a lot of excellent wins over a strong Illinois State team which will compete for the title in the Missouri Valley Conference," head coach Jason Suscha said.
Jenkins' tournament title came by way of a pair of 6-3, 6-2 victories over opponents from Morehead State and Illinois State, respectively. In the B flight final, Jenkins defeated teammate Cam Thompson 6-4, 6-4. Thompson had advanced to the final with a 3-set win over Bradley's Emily Regenold and a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ariane Maack of Illinois State.
In the C flight, Farmer won handily in straight sets in the quarters and semis before losing in three sets to Carmen Peters of Illinois State.
Playing in the A flight, Casperson, who played mainly at No. 3 last year, defeated an opponent from Morehead State before falling in the semis. Casperson then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Natalia Lech of Illinois State to finish 3rd.
In doubles play, Casperson and Jenkins teamed up to place third in the A flight, finishing with an 8-6 win over a team from Illinois State. Thompson and Ashley Breitenbach won the A flight back-draw, winning 8-2 over a duo from Bradley.
Sophomores Heather Hayward and Kate Panawash won in the doubles consolation semis, 8-6, before falling in the final. Farmer and Natali Jaimes won their first round doubles contest before falling in the quarters and front draw semifinals.
