INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Brittany Farmer won in straight sets at No. 6 singles but defending league champion UIC defeated the Butler women's tennis team, 4-1, Saturday in the Horizon League Women's Tennis semifinals.
Farmer defeated UIC's Zlatka Petrova 6-3, 6-3 to lead the Bulldogs. The win completed a stellar rookie campaign for Farmer, who finishes with a 19-11 (7-4 at No. 6) singles record.
UIC controlled the rest of the match, quickly winning the doubles point and taking three singles matches in straight sets. Becky Jenkins (No. 3 singles) and Cam Thompson (No. 5) were still battling when the Flames clinched the victory.
HORIZON LEAGUE AWARDS
Seniors Becky Jenkins and Molly Casperson were each honored by the Horizon League, earning second team all-league honors. Jenkins finished her final college season with a 17-8 singles record. She was 6-2 at No.3 singles and 5-4 at the fourth spot. Casperson captured 12 singles wins this season, including a 5-3 mark in league play during the regular season.
Where the duo made their mark was playing together at No. 1 doubles. Jenkins and Casperson combined to go 17-9 in combo play, including a 13-7 mark in dual matches at No. 1. The two seniors were partners during all four years of college.
Casperson finishes as a four-time All-Horizon League player. She earned first-team honors as a freshman and sophomore and was a second-team pick as a junior and senior. Jenkins was an all-league selection for the first time.
