INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler women's tennis team closed its regular season Sunday afternoon, clinching third place in the Horizon League in the process. The Bulldogs lost their season finale, 7-0, to league champion UIC.
Butler did keep a few of the contests close, in both singles and doubles. BU's No. 2 doubles team - senior Gabriella Bobrowski and sophomore Brittany Farmer - battled to a tie-breaker before falling 8-7 (4).
In singles play, Farmer and freshmen Caroline Hedrick and Stephanie McLoughlin each fell in three sets. Farmer won the first set 6-3 before losing to UIC's Linda Hricistova at No. 6 singles. At No. 2, Hedrick fell behind a set before dominating 6-1 in the second. Teona Tsertsvadze reversed that score in the third set to claim the win. It was Hedrick's only loss in league play this season. McLoughlin fell to UIC's Ilinca Cristescu in match that featured two tie-breakers. McLoughlin won the second set 6-1.
"UIC continues to be the class of the league with their ability to put the ball in the court," head coach Jason Suscha said. "I like our physical match-up with the rest of the league, and if we are able to dig deep and find the court more we will have every opportunity to win the league championship next weekend."
Butler, which finished 14-8 during the regular season and 6-2 in Horizon League action, is the No. 3 seed this coming weekend at the league championships. BU will take on No. 6 Milwaukee Thursday, April 21 at 1 p.m. ET.
