INDIANAPOLIS - The Bulldogs won a thrilling doubles point but Cleveland State controlled singles play as CSU defeated the BU women's tennis team, 4-1, Friday evening in the semifinal of the Horizon League Tennis Championships.
Butler, the tournament's No. 3 seed, will now take on Detroit Saturday, April 23 with the winner claiming third place in the league. Cleveland State advanced to the championship match where it will face defending league champion UIC.
After Butler won at No. 2 doubles and Cleveland State won at No. 3 doubles, the doubles point came down to a tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Stephanie McLoughlin and Gabrielle Rubenstein fell behind 7-4 before staging an exciting comeback. The match went to a tie-breaker, where the Bulldog freshmen duo made the big shots and controlled the net to win 9-8 (7-4).
Senior Gabriella Bobrowski and sophomore Brittany Farmer won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
The Vikings then won at Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles. Senior Natali Jaimes battled before losing in a three-set tie-breaker. Freshman Caroline Hedrick was in a close three-set match at No. 2 singles before the dual match ended.
