BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Butler picked up an impressive win at No. 1 doubles from freshmen Gabrielle Rubenstein and Stephanie McLoughlin but lost at Indiana, 7-0. The Bulldogs also had their match against Dayton scheduled for Feb. 5 postponed due to inclement weather.
Rubenstein and McLoughlin, a combo which has climbed to the top of the team's lineup, defeated Indiana's Evgeniya Vertesheva and Kayla Fujimoto 8-6. The Hoosiers edged Butler in the two other doubles matches before sweeping singles play.
"We came out and played really well in doubles. The win by the two freshmen at number one is the first win against a ranked team in my tenure here," head coach Jason Suscha said. "Stephanie and Gabrielle really understand the game of doubles and they both have a very big game that can dominate teams.
"It is definitely our best effort against a strong Indiana team and I look forward to our continued improvement as the season progresses."
McLoughlin also gave a strong effort at No. 3 singles, winning her first set before losing a close match. Senior Gabriella Bobrowski won her first set and was up 6-5 in the second set but couldn't pull out the victory. Suscha also lauded the play of sophomore Brittany Farmer at No. 5 singles.
BU's next match is at IUPUI Saturday, Feb. 12.
