INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler women's tennis team split two matches over the weekend, picking up its second win of the season Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs beat UIndy before dropping a Sunday match to No. 59 Memphis.
BU won all three matches for the doubles point against the Greyhounds, highlighted by an 8-0 win at No. 2 from junior Brittany Farmer and sophomore Caroline Hedrick. At No. 3 doubles, senior Kate Panawash and sophomore Angelina Qin won 8-4 and Butler's top doubles team (Stephanie McLoughlin and Gabrielle Rubenstein) won 8-5.
Of the day's six singles contests, BU won four in straight sets. Hedrick and senior Cam Thompson each picked up their team-leading eighth singles victory. Hedrick dominated at No. 1 singles over UIndy's Alena Perez-Majul 6-1, 6-0. Senior Cam Thompson, playing No. 5, won 6-4, 6-3 over Rachel Barger.
McLoughlin rolled at No. 2 singles and sophomore Laura Shull hung on for a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the sixth spot. Sophomore Gabrielle Rubenstein and junior Brittany Farmer also won, with each winning in a third-set tie-breaker.
Memphis, ranked 59th in the nation, came to Indy Sunday morning and beat Butler 7-0. The Tigers had three ranked singles players and a ranked doubles team. All six matches were done in straight sets. Farmer and Hedrick had the most success in doubles play, winning four games at No. 2 doubles.
Butler's next match is Feb. 15 at Xavier.
