The Butler women's tennis team lost to close matches over the weekend, falling to Evansville and Grand Valley State. Butler lost to Evansville 5-2 and to Grand Valley State 4-3.
Senior Cam Thompson and sophomore Angelina Qin led the Bulldogs against the Purple Aces. Thompson out-lasted UE's Emily Richardson at No. 4 singles 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Qin won at No. 5 6-0, 6-4 over Mina Milovic.
On Sunday morning, the Bulldogs won the doubles point and at the top of the lineup but Grand Valley State had more depth. Sophomores Stephanie McLoughlin and Gabrielle Rubenstein combined for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, then each won in singles play. McLoughlin rolled 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Rubenstein won 6-0, 6-3 in the second spot.
The Lakers won at every other spot in straight sets. BU's other doubles win came from Qin and senior Ashley Breitenbach at No. 3 doubles.
Butler's next match is Wednesday, Feb. 29 vs. Ball State.
