INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler women's tennis team hosted DePauw, UIndy and IUPUI in a four-team round robin tournament this weekend. The Bulldogs won three of the tourney's four doubles flights and four of the eight singles flights.
"Overall, I was really pleased with our performance this weekend," head coach Jason Suscha said. "After losing two key players from last year’s team it was important that the current players show some improvement over last year. Based on what I saw, I think we accomplished that."
A trio of sophomores - Caroline Hedrick, Stephanie McLoughlin and Laura Shull - each went 3-0 in singles play. Junior Brittany Farmer also won all three of her singles contests at No. 4 singles.
Hedrick won handily three times at the top of the lineup, losing just three games over the weekend. Hedrick also teamed with Farmer at No. 2 doubles to go 3-0 and claim the second doubles flight.
"Caroline had an outstanding weekend, which is a testament to her toughness on every point," Suscha said.
McLoughlin went 3-0 at No. 2 singles, winning close matches against DePauw and IUPUI and cruising easily against UIndy. McLoughlin was also one half of the winning No. 1 doubles team, playing with classmate Gabrielle Rubenstein. Shull won the No. 6 singles flight, providing the Bulldogs with a lift at the bottom of the lineup.
"We had a really pleasant surprise with Laura Shull winning the No. 6 singles flight without losing a set," Suscha said. "She will have a very positive impact on our team this year."
Seniors Ashley Breitenbach and Kahfii King won the No. 4 doubles flight, finishing with a 3-0 record.
DePauw also saw a lot of success in singles play, winning four flights. The only doubles flight not one by Butler was at No. 3, where IUPUI went 3-0.
Butler will play in a tournament in two weeks (Sept. 23-25) at Illinois State. The Bulldogs then will play in Cancun, Mexico, Oct. 6-9.
