Sophomores Lead The Way During Butler Invite's Day 1


INDIANAPOLIS - In its first action of the 2011-12 school year, the Butler women's tennis team hosted IUPUI, UIndy and DePauw in a round-robin tournament. Sophomores Caroline Hedrick, Stephanie McLoughlin and Laura Shull each went 2-0 in singles during the event's first day. 

Hedrick, playing No. 1 singles, rolled past DePauw's Kelly Gebert (6-1, 6-2) and IUPUI's Shelby Hullett (6-0, 6-0) to lead the Bulldogs. At No. 2, McLoughlin prevailed in a three-set win against DePauw and then made quick work of IUPUI's Vanessa Whyte 6-0, 6-2. Shull, playing in the sixth singles spot, won twice in straight sets. 

Overall, the Bulldogs went 11-9 in singles play, including a 7-1 mark vs. IUPUI. The other part of Saturday's tournament action pitted Butler vs. DePauw in doubles play. Butler went 3-2 in doubles play against the Tigers, winning at the 1, 2 and 4 spots. McLoughlin and classmate Gabrielle Rubenstein won at No. 1 doubles and Hedrick teamed with junior Brittany Farmer for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Seniors Ashley Breitenbach and Kahfii King combined for Butler's third doubles win, a 9-7 victory in the fourth spot.

Butler continues play Sunday, Sept. 11 vs. IUPUI and UIndy.
