INDIANAPOLIS - Clutch singles play at the top and bottom of the lineup finished a 4-3 Butler victory over Wright State in the Horizon League Women's Tennis Championship. BU won four of six in singles play to pick up the victory.
Sophomores Caroline Hedrick and Laura Shull clinched the final points to lift the No. 4 seed Dawgs past No. 5 Wright State. Hedrick lost a first-set tie-break before winning 6-4, 6-3 the rest of the way. Shull's 6-2, 6-3 win over Chelsea Girgash was the final point in the win.
After losing the doubles point, BU took control of the match with wins by sophomore Stephanie McLoughlin and senior Cam Thompson. McLoughlin won at No. 2 in straight sets and Thompson did likewise in the fourth spot.
Butler advances to play league champion UIC Saturday morning at 9 a.m. ET. The match will be at West Indy Racquet Club at 4458 Guion Road on Indy's west side.
