NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomore Gabrielle Rubenstein and senior Cam Thompson each won a singles flight and the Butler women's tennis team posted a winning team singles record at Illinois State's Redbird Invitational. Rubenstein and Thompson each went 3-0 during the tournament.
Rubenstein, a sophomore lefty, won the No. 2 flight and Thompson won the third singles flight. Rubenstein defeated Chicago State's Ruta Grinvalde and Morehead State's Victoria Cran in straight sets to make the final, where she beat Morehead State's Alexis Garrett 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Thompson won all three of her singles contests in straight sets, culminating wtih a 6-2, 6-2 win over Illinois State's Gabby Phillips.
Sophomore Caroline Hedrick went 2-1 and advanced to the No. 1 flight final. She posted two easy swins before falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to Illinois State's Aniko Kiss. Sophomore Angelina Qin also had a pair of singles victories.
Rubenstein and sophomore Stephanie McLoughlin picked up a doubles win and Hedrick teamted with junior Brittany Farmer for a singles win. Farmer went down with an illness and had to withdraw from play.
The Butler women's tennis team is going to Cancun, Mexico, for the Barcelo College Cup Oct. 6-9. The ITA Regionals are in Memphis, Tenn., Oct. 13-16.
