Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler women's tennis team came up short in their home opener on Sunday (Jan. 20), as visiting Bowling Green hung on for a 5-2 decision at the Butler Bubble.
The Bulldogs attempted to rally from a defeat in the doubles point, as sophomore Molly Casperson notched a swift 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles over Christine Chiricosta. Sophomore Becky Jenkins also picked up a two-set decision at No. 5, topping Andrea Volle 7-5, 6-3.
Freshman Gabriella Bobrowski put up a strong showing at No. 4, winning the first set 6-3 and holding a 4-2 edge in the second, but Samantha Kintzel claimed four-straight games to force a third set before winning the bout in a tie-breaker.
Freshman Natali Jaimes and Bobrowski also teamed up for a doubles victory at the No. 3 position, trumping Katia Babina and Kintzel, 8-1. Casperson and Jenkins came close to scoring the doubles point in favor of the Bulldogs at the No. 1 spot but fell to Kelsey Jakupcin and Chiricosta, 9-7.
The Butler women's team returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 26) when they battle Miami (Ohio) beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio.
