Indianapolis, Ind. - Butler tried to rally from a loss in doubles play with wins in three singles bouts, but the deciding fourth victory eluded the Bulldogs, as visiting Murray State held on for a 4-3 decision on Sunday (Feb. 15) afternoon at the Butler Bubble.
Butler fell behind early in the match after falling in two of three doubles matches. After dropping the No. 3 bout, the Bulldog tandem of Molly Casperson and Becky Jenkins scored an 8-4 win at No. 2 to bring the competition back to even, but Murray State would hold on for the deciding point at the top spot to secure a 1-0 lead in the match.
Jenkins brought the contest back to a 1-1 tie with a strong 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alexis Webb at No. 3, but a Racers' win at the top spot put them back in front moments later. Gabriella Bobrowski responded at the No. 4 position, trumping Adriana Alvarez, 6-2, 6-1, but MSU answered back with a decision at No. 2.
The comeback attempt ended there, as Murray State scored the deciding win at No. 6 before Cam Thompson tallied the Bulldogs' final victory at the No. 5 spot with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ashley Pierson.
Butler will have nearly two weeks before its next competition, as it travels to Bowling Green on Friday, Feb. 27.
