Indianapolis, Ind. - A tightly-contested that featured a trio of three-set singles bouts fell just out of reach of host Butler, as the Bulldogs dropped a 4-3 match to Xavier on Wednesday (March 25) at the Butler Bubble.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after claiming the top two bouts in the doubles competition. The No. 1 team of Molly Casperson and Becky Jenkins cruised to an 8-1 decision over Kelsey Kinnard and Tifanie Treece before the No. 2 tandem of Natali Jaimes and Gabriella Bobrowski picked up the deciding win with an 8-6 triumph over Kaitlyn Zinn and Kara Courtney.
Butler would be unable to pick up the necessary points in singles play to earn the team victory, however, despite strong efforts at the middle of the lineup.
Bobrowski and Jenkins each had to rally from opening-set defeats to pick up wins at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, as the former topped Treece, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 and the latter defeated Jeanette Feider, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Cam Thompson bounced back from a first-set loss to Jill Ducro at No. 5 to score a 6-1 decision in the second set, but the Xavier player scored the win thanks to a 6-0 win in the third set. Casperson, meanwhile, dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (5) decision at No. 3 to Kinnard.
The Butler men's and women's teams will head to Detroit on Friday (March 27) as both squads take on the host Titans beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Franklin Racquet Club. The matches were originally scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
