Tennis: Weekly Release (January 22, 2002)

ROAD TRIP: The Butler men's tennis team will travel to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State on Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs (1-1) will continue their road trip by taking on Purdue on Saturday (Jan. 26) at 1 p.m. and Kentucky on Sunday (Jan. 27) at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs' next home match is on Feb. 9 against IUPUI (9 a.m.) and Bradley (1 p.m.).

BULLDOGS KNOCK OFF REDBIRDS: The Bulldogs defeated Illinois State on Friday (Jan. 18) at the Butler Bubble in their first meet of the 2002 season. Butler posted four singles wins in the meet, as No. 1 Brandon Currie defeated Rick Heath (3-6, 7-6, 7-5), No. 2 Jimmy Borendame beat Jason Smith (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) , No. 3 Josh Rey defeated Ben Pittinan (6-4, 6-0) and No. 6 Abel Contreras beat Marek Blaskovic (6-3, 7-6).

DOUBLE DUTY: Seniors Brandon Currie and Jimmy Borendame picked up the lone doubles win against the Redbirds, as they defeated the duo of Rick Heath and Jason Smit 8-6 in No. 1 doubles.

CARDINALS FLY PAST BUTLER: Butler fell to Ball State, 6-1 on Saturday (Jan. 19) at the Muncie YMCA. The tandem of Brandon Currie and Jimmy Borendame won the No. 1 doubles, 8-6, over Jason Phessel and Kevin Barnett, and Currie picked up the lone win in singles play, defeating Phessel, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 1 position.

STARTING OFF: The Butler women's tennis team will begin its 2002 spring season on Jan. 29 against Ball State. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs' first home meet will be against Evansville on Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
