Result: Butler def. Valparaiso 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 25-17
INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Jessica Wolfe had 19 kills and Butler hit .302 as the Bulldog volleyball team defeated Valparaiso, 3-1, Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Senior Porshia Allen added a double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs.
Junior Kelsey Labrum had 10 kills and hit .833, while classmate Katie Daprile added 21 digs and a season-high six assists. Freshman setter Gina Vera handed out 47 assists and added nine digs and eight kills.
Butler (19-11, 8-4 HL) took an early 10-4 before the Crusaders answered with six straight points to make it 10-10. Valpo would lead 22-20 before BU got the next two points to tie it at 22. At 23-23, a kill by Allen and a block by Allen and Jalesa Lee clinched the first set for the Dogs.
The second set was close throughout, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead 21-17 on a block by Maureen Bamiro and Vera. Valparaiso (17-8, 9-3 HL) rallied to take a 24-23 lead and force a Butler timeout. Trailing 25-24, Butler got a kill from Labrum to make it 25-25, but Valpo got the next two points to clinch the second set 27-25.
Valparaiso took a quick lead in the third set until an ace by Labrum tied it at 11. The Crusaders would lead 17-14, but the Bulldogs answered to take the lead at 21-20 on a Bamiro kill. Valpo would get the next two points to force BU to call a timeout. With the match tied 22-22, Butler pulled forward with three straight points on an attack error and two kills by Stephanie Steele.
Much unlike the first three sets, the final set wasn't close. Butler cruised, blazing to a 12-3 lead. Valparaiso pulled to within 16-11 but never got close as BU won 25-17.
Angie Porche led Valparaiso with 16 kills. Kim Bukowski had 43 assists and 14 digs.
Butler continues at home Friday, Nov. 6 to host Loyola at 7 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
