Butler Volleyball Sweeps Chicago State
CHICAGO - Junior Jessica Wolfe and sophomore Maureen Bamiro each posted a season high in kills and Butler hit .402 as a team as the BU volleyball team swept Chicago State, 3-0, Thursday evening. The win gave the Bulldogs their third straight victory, and it improved the team's record to 4-1.
Wolfe racked up 19 kills and hit a sterling .515 for the contest. Bamiro totaled 13 kills and hit .524 as the Bulldogs made quick work of the Cougars (0-5).
"Jessica and Maureen hit really well for us tonight, and Gina (Vera) did a great job distributing the ball to our setters," head coach Sharon Clark said.
The Bulldogs' most challenging set was the first, as the two teams traded points until BU forced Chicago State to call timeout by taking a 19-14 lead. Butler stretched the lead to 24-17 before CSU rallied for four straight points. Bamiro then slammed a kill to finish the first stanza 25-21.
Butler jumped out to a big lead early in the second set behind stellar hitting and strong serving from junior Katie Daprile. Daprile served nine points before CSU put a stop to the Bulldogs' 9-2 run. The lead would grow to 17-4 before BU claimed the set 25-13.
Butler cruised through the third set, winning the first seven points with freshman Kelly Hunter serving. BU would build a 24-10 lead before winning 25-12 to clinch the sweep.
"Kelly came in and served great balls for us," Clark said. "Our freshmen stepped up and carried the match for us."
The win served as a tuneup as the Bulldogs head to Marquette for a tournament this weekend Sept. 4-5). Weekend play starts Friday with BU taking on Austin Peay at 1 p.m. and host Marquette at 8 p.m. The Bulldogs face Binghamton and Texas State on Saturday.
NOTES: The sweep was Butler's fourth of the season. The Bulldogs, the IPFW tourney champion last weekend, have yet to play a match go longer than three sets...Gina Vera had 31 assists and a season-high 14 digs. Vera, an all-tournament performer last weekend at IPFW, leads the Horizon League in sets per set (11.42) and sets (168)...Jesicca Wolfe leads the Horizon League in kills (74) and kills per set (4.93)...BU held Chicago State to .028 hitting.
