Kent State Edges Bulldogs, 3-2
KENT, Ohio - Senior Porshia Allen and junior Jessica Wolfe each had a double-double and junior Katie Daprile had a season-high 26 digs but the Butler volleyball team lost at Kent State, 3-2, Saturday afternoon. BU held a 2-1 lead in the contest before the Flashes rallied to take the last two sets.
Allen capped a brilliant week with 18 kills and 19 digs, while Wolfe had 17 kills and 16 digs. Butler (10-7) played well offensively, hitting .267, but Kent State (7-7) managed to prevail in the tight contest.
Junior Kelsey Labrum, enjoying her best week of the season, had 12 kills and hit. 385.
"We knew coming in this would be a tough match," head coach Sharon Clark said of Kent State, who the Bulldogs had defeated three weeks ago at the season-opening IPFW tournament. We played point for point all the way through the fifth set."
KSU took the first set in solid fashion 25-15 before Butler answered. The Bulldogs won the next two sets. In the second stanza, BU jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout for a 25-18 win.
Leading 10-7 in the third set, Butler took command 14-7 when the Dogs won four straight points with Labrum serving. Butler led by as many as eight, then KSU stormed back to come within 22-19. BU claimed the next three points to win 25-19.
Kent State rolled in the fourth set 25-19 to set up the fifth set. The decisive stretch featured both teams trading points and a kill by freshman Gina Vera tied the set 13-13. KSU answered by getting the next two points and taking the decisive set 15-13.
After 17 matches on the road, BU will have its home opener Friday, Sept. 25 against Cleveland State. First serve is at 7 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
