ROCK HILL, S.C. - Butler hit .330 as a team and held its opponent to .000 hitting as the Bulldog volleyball team routed NC Central, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Winthrop's Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. BU stifled the Eagles to less than 20 points in each of the three sets. The Bulldogs will conclude play at Winthrop with two matches Saturday.
Our offense did a great job against a good blocking team, but it was the details in our defense that kept rallies going and won the match for us," head coach Sharon Clark said. "Our subs did a great job off the bench and Kelly (Hunter) did a great job setting in the third set."
Butler (7-4) wasted little time taking command of the first set, bolting out to a 13-4 lead, and eventually led by as much as 20-12. Three late kills - including a pair from junior Jessica Wolfe - and a couple of Eagle service errors gave Butler the first set 25-19.
The second set was a little tighter, NC Central (1-8) pulling to within 14-12 on a block. The Bulldogs then ripped off a 10-1 to take a commanding 24-13 lead, and a Wolfe kill put the set away. Butler took the second set 25-14.
The third set appeared to me like the one before it, as an attack error on the Bulldogs put the set at 12-12. BU then went on an 8-2 run that was keyed by a couple of kills from Wolfe and strong serving from Hunter and junior Katie Daprile. Butler ended up taking the third set 25-18 to finish the sweep.
Butler only trailed at one point in the entire match, at 1-0 in the second set.
BU takes on Appalachian State Saturday at 11 a.m. and host Winthrop at 7:30 p.m.
