KENT, Ohio - Butler brought a balanced offensive attack into its second match of the day, sweeping Robert Morris, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Kent State. The Bulldogs, led by senior Porshia Allen's 10 kills, hit .343 as a team. Juniors Kelsey Labrum and Jessica Wolfe had nine and eight kills, respectively. It was BU's 10th win of the season, each by a 3-0 score.
The two teams traded punches in the first set, with RMU taking a 20-19 lead. Moments later, the Colonials led 22-21 when two attack errors by RMU put the Bulldogs ahead 23-22. Following a Robert Morris timeout, junior Katie Daprile put the finishing touches on the rally with a pair of aces. BU won the first set 25-22.
The key moment in the second set came with BU leading 13-12. A kill by junior Jalesa Lee and a pair of RMU attack errors gave the Bulldogs a 16-12 advantage they wouldn't surrender. BU would end up winning the set 25-18, with the final point coming on an ace.
Butler (10-6) went on another big run in the third set. Leading 14-12, BU won five straight points, with Daprile doing the majority of the serving during the stretch. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 23-16 before two straight points by Robert Morris forced a BU timeout. Butler went on to win the set 25-19, with a kill and an ace by Allen finishing the match.
Freshman Gina Vera handed out 28 assists and had five kills of her own in BU's balanced offense.
"Gina did a good job of mixing up her passes to our hitters," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We really came together after losing to Utah State earlier in the day."
Nobody on Robert Morris had double digits in kills. Setter Alyssa Bennett did have 33 assists.
Butler concludes the weekend vs. tourney host Kent State Saturday at 2 p.m.
