Butler Picks Up Second Sweep Of Day vs. Texas State
MILWAUKEE - Senior Porshia Allen posted season highs of 14 kills and 14 digs and junior Jessica Wolfe also had a double-double as the Butler volleyball team swept Texas State, 3-0, Saturday evening at the Marquette Volleyball Invitational. Butler moves to 6-3 with the win, following a sweep of Binghamton earlier Saturday afternoon.
Allen hit .417 to lead the Dogs in which appeared to be an offensive battle. Neither team hit close to .200 but the Bulldogs controlled play throughout the match. Wolfe had 10 kills and 10 digs while junior Brittany Awai chipped in with 16 digs to shore up the defense and give BU its third win in its last five matches.
"Our girls knew what they had to do to rebound after Friday," head coach Sharon Clark said. "And they got the job done."
Butler (6-3) trailed early in the first set before a 7-1 run tied the first set at 19. The match would move to 24-24 before kills by sophomore Maureen Bamiro and Wolfe finished the first set at 26-24.
Like the first set, Texas State (1-6) broke out to an early lead in set number two before Butler took control with a 10-3 run that put the Dogs up 23-20. A kill each by junior Katie Daprile and Allen ended the set 25-21 and gave Butler a 2-0 lead.
BU controlled the third set throughout to win 25-19, clinching its second shutout of the day.
Clark praised the all-around play of the Bulldogs, but the defense allowed BU to control the contest.
"We hit well, passed well and defended well," Clark said. "Brittany (Awai) was phenomenal. She made a lot of plays, keeping balls alive and keeping plays going for our offense. Also, Porshia did a great job in the middle. And we hit really well."
Awai had a match-high 16 digs to lead the Bulldogs on defense.
Butler will take its 6-3 record to IUPUI this week on Wednesday, Sept, 9 at 7 p.m.
