KENT, Ohio - Butler got 16 kills and nine digs from senior Porshia Allen, but Utah State hit .276 and had 10 team blocks en route to a 3-1 win over the Bulldog volleyball team Friday afternoon at Kent State's Mizuno Open. BU will take on Robert Morris Friday evening.
Junior Jessica Wolfe had 10 kills and seven digs. Freshman Gina Vera passed out 39 assists and had 10 digs. Junior Katie Daprile had a team-high 17 digs.
One night after rolling over league foe Youngstown State, but kept its momentum going with a 25-21 win in the first set. The key stretch in the first set came when Butler, leading 13-12, ripped off a 5-1 run to take an 18-13 lead. BU then held USU at bay to go up 1-0.
Butler (9-6) appeared to be in control in the second stanza, leading 16-13 after a kill by Wolfe. Utah State answered with a 7-1 run to take a 20-17 advantage. USU built the lead to 24-20, forcing BU to call a timeout. On the very next point, USU's Laurel Bodily finished the set with an ace to win 25-20 and tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, USU used a 6-2 run to take a 19-13 lead. After a BU timeout, the two teams then played virtually even. The Aggies (7-3) went on to win the set 25-18 and take a 2-1 lead.
Leading 16-15 in what appeared to be a tight fourth set, Utah State won six points in a row with Christine Morrill serving to go up 22-15. Butler closed to within four on two occasions, but Utah State got a kill from Liz McArthur to put the finishing touches on the clinching 25-20 set.
McArthur was strong for USU, racking up 21 kills. Chelsea Fowles had 46 assists and Christine Morrill had 18 digs for the Aggies.
Butler continues tournament play at Kent State Friday evening at 5 p.m. against Robert Morris.
