BU Volleyball Cruises Past Milwaukee, 3-0

BOX SCORE

RESULT: Butler def. Milwaukee 25-16, 25-21, 25-19

INDIANAPOLIS - With two key Horizon League matches this week, the Butler volleyball team needed to get off to a fast start. The Bulldogs did just that, jumping on Milwaukee early and cruising to a 3-0 win. Junior Jessica Wolfe led BU with 10 kills and nine digs, while senior Porshia Allen added 10 kills and four digs.

"We jumped on them early and never really let them play the way they usually do," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We got hot early and finished them off. That's what we needed to do.

"Our defense was really good. We blocked well. And then we went to the outside, where Porshia and Jessica got hot."

Freshman setter Gina Vera handed out 35 assists and for block assists. Sophomore Maureen Bamiro was dangerous on both offense and defense, totaling nine kills on .389 hitting with six block assists.

Early in the first set, Butler (14-8, 4-1 HL) took an 8-7 lead on a Wolfe kill.

Butler would never trail again in the set.

Later, an 8-2 run gave BU a commanding 19-11 lead. The Bulldogs maintained that lead and Wolfe closed the stanza with another kill to give Butler a 25-16 win and the early lead.

Butler dominated the early part of the second set, ripping off a 10-1 lead. Milwaukee (5-11, 2-3 HL) pulled to within 11-7 but would get no closer than three. A kill of the right hand of Bamiro gave Butler the second set 25-21 and a 2-0 lead.

BU took command of the third set with a 6-2 spurt that gave the Dogs a 9-5 lead. Milwaukee traded punches with the Bulldogs but couldn't put together run until it was too late. Leading 18-13, a 6-2 Butler run gave BU match point at 24-15. That is when the Panthers managed four straight points to force a Butler timeout at 24-19. On the final point, Vera fed Bamiro for a punishing kill to put the match and the set away.

UWM's Jena Berg had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Lauren Felsing, Milwaukee's all-league libero, had 17 digs.

Butler continues its week with a match against Green Bay Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The match will be streamed live and can be found on ButlerSports.com.
