Bulldog Volleyball Routs Wright State
INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Porshia Allen had a double-double of 18 kills and 10 digs and Butler hit .322 as a team as the Bulldog volleyball team swept Wright State, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Allen hit .429 and had no attack errors, leading BU to a rout over WSU.
Freshman setter Gina Vera handed out 35 assists and added five kills of her own, while sophomore Maureen Bamiro had nine kills and nine block assists. Junior Jessica Wolfe had seven kills and 13 digs, and junior Katie Daprile had a match-high 17 digs.
Butler (12-7, 3-0 HL) jumped on the Raiders early in the first set, taking a 5-1 lead and never looking back. WSU never came within three for the rest of the set as Butler won 25-17.
Set number two was much closer, as the team traded points throughout. A kill by WSU's Lexi Leonhard pulled the Raiders even 23-23, which was the 13th tie of the second set. Butler answered, as Vera fed Allen for a kill and then Vera and Bamiro teamed up for a block to give Butler the set 25-23 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
BU, which was coming off a tough 3-2 win over Cleveland State the night before, sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the third set, forcing a Raider timeout. WSU managed to pull within 8-7 before an 8-1 run by the Bulldogs gave BU a 16-8. Wright State never got closer than five after that, as BU clinched the sweep with another 25-17 set.
Shaunda Standifer led WSU with 10 kills. Katherine Godina had 10 digs.
Butler travels to Valparaiso Friday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. and then hosts Alabama A&M on Homecoming on October 3.
