The Butler volleyball team started its spring season recently with a pair of events at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs hosted a women's open tournament on March 27 and then welcomed IUPUI to Hinkle for a scrimmage on April 2.
Butler won the open tourney, gaining the No. 1 seed after the first round of play. A team made of young BU alumni (featuring Nina Inic '09, Dana Daprile '09, Stephanie Steele '10 and Brittany Awai '10) made the finals and held a 13-9 lead against the varsity Bulldogs. The varsity Bulldogs came back behind solid serving from Kelly Hunter and went on a 6-0 run to win 15-13. The tourney marked the debut of Susan Lester, who is giving volleyball a try after playing four year on the Butler women's basketball team.
The Bulldogs hosted IUPUI April 2 at Hinke, defeating the Jaguars 3-1. After IUPUI got out to a 1-0 lead, Jessica Wolfe and Maureen Bamiro dominated the match with solid blocking and aggressive hitting. Hunter and Gina Vera split the time at setter and both played well.
Butler has two more spring dates on the schedule, including a tournament at Capitol Sports Center Saturday, April 11. The final contest is an exhibition at Purdue.
