INDIANAPOLIS - Butler volleyball's senior class went out in style, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win over Cleveland State Saturday afternoon. Jessica Wolfe led the team with 21 kills and 20 digs, while Katie Daprile recorded 26 digs in the win.
The victory gives Butler a 19-9 regular season and 13-3 mark in the Horizon League. The Bulldogs clinched second place in the league standings and a first-round bye in next week's league tourney. Butler finished 2010 with a 10-3 home record, and the Bulldogs are 19-3 in Hinkle over the past two seasons.
Wolfe and Daprile were everywhere, keeping Cleveland State's attack at bay. The Vikings, the Horizon League's top hitting team entering the weekend, managed just .160 hitting behind Butler's defense. BU also had 11.5 team blocks.
Daprile now has 1,943 career digs, the most of any player in Horizon League history. Milwaukee's Lauren Felsing (2006-09) previously held the record with 1,929.
BU rolled in the first set, leading 16-9 early and not letting up. Leading 22-17, BU got a pair of kills from Wolfe and an error on CSU to clinch the set 25-17. Butler would go on to take the second set 25-20 for a 2-0 match lead.
CSU bounced back after the break, hitting .289 in the third set and taking it 25-18. A 5-0 run at 14-10 gave Cleveland State a big lead and made it a 2-1 match.
Butler left nothing to chance, pounding the Vikings in the fourth set. Leading 6-4, BU got three straight points for a 9-4 lead, forcing a timeout. At 19-14, BU would go on a 6-1 run to finish the match. Wolfe put the exclamation point on the contest, with a clinching kill in her final attack in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Bulldogs will play in the 2010 Horizon League Volleyball Championship Saturday, Nov. 20 at Milwaukee. BU could play one of Cleveland State, Valparaiso or Green Bay in the semifinal.
