Result: Butler def. Cleveland State 25-18, 16-25, 25-20, 27-29, 15-7
MILWAUKEE - The Butler volleyball team is one win away from a championship. The Bulldogs got 24 kills and 24 digs from senior Jessica Wolfe and out-lasted Cleveland State, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in the Horizon League Volleyball Championship semifinal.
The No. 2 seed, BU (20-9) will play No. 4 seed Valparaiso in Sunday's championship match. The Crusaders upset top seed Milwaukee in three sets earlier Saturday afternoon.
Wolfe hit .282 on the night, making just four attack errors over 71 swings. She also added two services aces and a block with her 24 digs. Freshman Claire Randich added 12 kills and two blocks, hitting a robust .429.
"We always believed this team has both the talent and the heart to be the best in the Horizon League," head coach Sharon Clark said. "The whole team stepped up and played all out defense. The bench was outstanding in support and making key plays. Jessie had a great performance all around and Claire ran the middle really well."
"Maureen, Jalesa and Maggie (Harbison) all blocked really well at the net," Clark added.
With the score 1-1 at the break, BU took control of the match with a 25-20 win in set three. The fourth set was a marathon, with the two teams trading shots well past 25 points. BU had match point at 24-23 but CSU responded. The Bulldogs would hold off two Viking set point opportunities before falling 29-27.
Butler put an exclamation point on the match in the fifth set.
BU rolled out to an 8-1 lead and made the decisive set a laugher. CSU would get no closer than 10-5 as BU slammed the door shut 15-7.
The BU-Valpo final will be at 2 p.m. ET at Milwaukee's Klotche Center. Fans can watch live video HERE.
