INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Maureen Bamiro was tabbed Horizon League Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week after a pair of Butler home victories last week. It is the first career honor for Bamiro.

The Kalamazoo, Mich., native won the award after posting 14 blocks in the Bulldogs' victories against IUPUI and Wright State. Bamiro had seven blocks (six assist) to go along with 16 kills in Butler's 3-0 win over IUPUI on Sept. 21. The junior then had another seven blocks (all assist) with her 13 kills in BU's 3-1 win over Wright State on Sept. 24.

For the week, she totaled 29 kills (4.14 per set) and 14 blocks (2.00 per set). She also had a hitting percentage of .447 in the two matches.

"Maureen has improved so much at reading setters, and that's really helped with her blocking," head coach Sharon Clark said. "Offensively, she's such a great weapon for us. But defensively, she's been a huge part of our success this season."

Bamiro has helped the Bulldogs to a 3-0 start in Horizon League play. Butler hosts UIC Friday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.
