RESULT: SMU def. Butler 25-16, 18-25, 25-18, 25-10
WACO, Texas - Senior Jessica Wolfe had a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs and senior Katie Daprile registered 20 digs, but the Butler volleyball team dropped its season opener, 3-1, Friday evening to SMU. The match was the first of three for Butler at Baylor's tournament.
SMU started fast in the first set, striking out to a 7-3 lead. A Mustang attack error would bring the Bulldogs to within 9-7, but SMU would go on a 5-0 run to build the lead to 14-7. BU wouldn't get closer than 21-16 en route to dropping the first set 25-16.
Butler (0-1) battled back, however, winning the second set. Two consecutive kills by Wolfe and an attack error on SMU gave the Dawgs an 11-6 advantage. Butler would keep pace and never trail the rest of the second set, winning 25-18.
The Mustangs then claimed a 25-18 victory in the third set before breaking out in a quick fourth set. SMU got out to a 10-1 lead in the clinching set, and would eventually win 25-10.
Freshman Maggie Harbison had nine kills and 11 digs in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Gina Vera, an all-newcomer selection in the Horizon League a year ago, had 36 assists.
Butler hit just .088 for the match, compared to .258 for SMU. The low hitting percentage for BU was due to good blocking by SMU. The Mustangs had 13.0 blocks to BU's 4.0. Southern Methodist's Caitlin Adair finished with 10 block assists.
Two SMU players, Dana Powell (14 kills, 12 digs) and Kathryn Wilkerson (11 kills, 12 digs), posted double-doubles for the Mustangs.
The Bulldogs will play twice Saturday, facing Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m. ET and host school Baylor at 8 p.m. ET.
