RESULT: Xavier def. Butler 19-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 15-6
INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler volleyball team had a 2-1 match lead but Xavier rallied to defeat the Bulldogs in five sets Saturday evening in the finale of the Butler Invitational. Xavier finished the weekend event at Hinkle Fieldhouse 3-0, while Butler finished 2-1.
Senior Jessica Wolfe had 15 kills and nine digs for BU, while junior Maureen Bamiro added 10 kills. Both Bulldog players were named to the six-player all-tournament team. Xavier's Claire Paszkiewicz was named MVP of the invitational.
"It was an intense, competitive match all the way around," head coach Sharon Clark said. "It was two very athletic teams going at it with all their heart. It could've gone either way."
Butler started strong, jumping out to a 10-4 lead in the first set. The Dawgs maintained a healthy lead throughout the opening set en route to a 25-19 win. Xavier countered in the second set, running out to a 6-1 lead. Butler battled back to within 14-13 on a block by freshmen Maggie Harbison and Claire Randich. Leading 18-15, XU ripped off six straight points for set point. Xavier would win the set 25-16.
Butler appeared to take a commanding lead in the match by winning the third set 25-19. The turning point of the third set was a 7-0 BU run that put the Dawgs ahead 15-8. Xavier would get no closer than 21-18 before relenting and giving BU a 2-1 match lead.
The momentum clearly belonged to Butler early in the fourth set, with the Bulldogs up 6-2. Xavier made some adjustments. With the set tied at 15, a 6-1 Xavier lead made it 21-16. The Musketeers would take the set 25-19, forcing a fifth set.
"Xavier moved their personnel and made some switches," Clark said. "But mostly, it was on our end. We weren't able to run our offense the way we were earlier in the match."
Xavier (5-4) rolled to a 5-1 lead in the deciding set, and would take a commanding 13-4 on a kill by Chelsea Campbell, another all-tourney Xavier player. At set point, Harbison picked up a kill to keep the Dawgs alive, but Xavier finished the set 15-6 to win the match 3-2.
Senior Katie Daprile had a match-high 18 digs while sophomore Gina Vera had 36 assists and 14 digs. Randich and Harbison each had six block assists.
Butler (4-6), now done with its three in-season invitationals, will open league play next weekend. Butler travels to Loyola Friday, Sept. 17 and to Valparaiso on Sept. 18.
