RESULT: Stephen F. Austin def. Butler 25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 19-25, 15-12
WACO, Texas - Down two sets to none, the Butler volleyball team mounted a thrilling comeback to tie the match 2-2. However, the Bulldogs fell short in the fifth set against Stephen F. Austin, falling to 0-2 on the season's opening weekend.
Senior Jessica Wolfe led the Bulldogs with 25 kills and 20 digs. Junior Maureen Bamiro added 22 kills and five block assists.
The Bulldogs dug themselves an early hole, falling 25-22 and 25-23 in the first two sets. But Stephen F. Austin found it difficult to put the Dawgs away.
A pair of SFA attack errors and a pair of Bamiro kills put Butler ahead 12-7. SFA came back to close within 12-11, but Butler answered. An ace by freshman Maggie Harbison gave the Bulldogs a 22-17 lead and a Wolfe kill made it 23-17. Butler called timeout at 23-20, then finished the victorious set with a kill by Wolfe and an SFA ball-handling error.
BU sprinted out to leads of 8-1 and 10-3 in the fourth set, and the Bulldogs led by as much as 20-10. SFA got as close as 24-19, but BU went on to win 25-19 to tie the match 2-2.
The fifth and deciding set was tied at 6-6 before Stephen F. Austin took control. A kill by freshman Claire Randich made it 12-11, but SFA prevailed 15-12.
Senior libero Katie Daprile had a match-high 33 digs and sophomore Gina Vera posted 55 assists.
Butler concludes the weekend vs. host school Baylor tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
