INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Maggie Harbison was selected as Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Butler volleyball team to a 2-0 start in league play. It is the first award of Harbison's BU career.
"It's a great honor for Maggie, being recognized during her freshman year," head coach Sharon Clark said. "Maggie has done a great job of blocking for us so far this season, setting up a wall at the net. She reads the other team's hitters very well."
Harbison, a native of Carmel, Ind., had 21 kills, 10 blocks and 16 digs to help Butler go 2-0 on the road last weekend. On Friday at Loyola, the 6-1 Harbison had six blocks and nine digs to go along with a season-best 12 kills in Butler's 3-2 win. The next night, playing one of the league's top teams in Valparaiso, Harbison totaled nine kills, seven digs and four blocks. The Bulldogs defeated the Crusaders, 3-2, picking up their second road win of the weekend.
Harbison has started all 12 matches this season for Butler, which has won three of its last four matches. She leads the team in blocking (0.83 per set) on the year while averaging 2.06 kills and 2.36 digs per set.
Butler (6-6, 2-0 HL) will host IUPUI Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The match starts at 7 p.m. and will be the team's Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.
