Bulldogs Fall At Notre Dame
Notre Dame def. Butler 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Butler volleyball team concluded its season-opening weekend with a 3-1 loss at Notre Dame Sunday afternoon, rounding out ND's Shamrock Invitational.
Senior Maureen Bamiro had 13 kills and five blocks to lead the Bulldogs. Sophomore Maggie Harbison, who made the all-tournament team, added 12 kills, 10 digs and five blocks. Harbison also had three aces. Sophomore Maureen Nesbit added a team-high 16 digs.
After Notre Dame took the first set 25-20, Butler played its best volleyball and won the second set. The Bulldogs trailed 8-3 early but rallied and grabbed its first lead at 16-15. Leading 21-19, Butler saw Notre Dame go on a run and lead 22-21. With junior Gina Vera serving, Butler answered and won the set. Freshman Belle Obert crowned the set with a kill.
Notre Dame (3-0) kept the Bulldogs at bay, winning the last two sets to clinch the match. Notre Dame's Andrea McHugh was named tourney MVP. She had 17 kills and 16 digs against the Bulldogs. Jeni Houser had 10 kills and 10 digs for the Irish.
Butler will travel to the Pacific northwest next weekend for four matchs at the University of Portland. The Dawgs are in action against Portland Thursday, Sept. 1 at 3 p.m. ET.
