INDIANAPOLIS - A big run in the first set and dominant defense led the Butler volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Wright State Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs had 13 team blocks and held WSU to .019 hitting.
"It was definitely good to see the team playing with confidence," head coach Sharon Clark said. "I thought our defense was fantastic. We covered a lot of areas on the court, picking up tips and short balls in the but we also dug some good balls as well."
Senior Maureen Bamiro, sophomore Maggie Harbison and freshmen Belle Obert and Stephanie Kranda led the block party for Butler. Obert had two solo blocks and four block assists while Harbison, Kranda and Bamiro each made five blocks.
Freshman Kelly Kyle had 10 kills for the Bulldogs, who hit .248 as a team and had half as many attack errors as the Raiders. Bamiro added nine kills and Obert had eight.
The Bulldogs set the tone for the night with a season-high 11-0 run in the middle of the first set. Wright State led 14-10, but with Harbison serving, Butler ripped off a stretch of aces and blocks and scored 11 straight points to take a 21-14 lead. Butler would go on to win 25-17.
BU dominated the last two sets as well. The Bulldogs led 6-1 and then put together another 10-5 run to lead in the second set 16-6. After a timeout, Butler continued to build the lead and would lead by as many as 22-8 in a 25-16 set win.
