Bulldogs Roll Past Loyola, 3-1

Butler def. Loyola 23-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-19

INDIANAPOLIS - Tough serving and stingy defense helped the Butler volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Loyola Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Freshman Kelly Kyle had a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Senior Maureen Bamiro added 13 kills and four blocks.

Freshman Brooke Ruffolo had 25 digs and junior Gina Vera handed out 41 assists to go with 12 digs. Vera also hit .545 (6-0-11). Sophomore Maggie Harbison had nine kills on .364 hitting in addition to four aces and three blocks.

The Bulldogs started slow before dominating the final three sets. Loyola went to Laura Purcell on offense in the early stages of the first set and built a 15-10 lead heading into a timeout. The Bulldogs would rally to pull within 18-17 but the Ramblers answered with five of the next six points to lead 23-18. Loyola had set point at 24-19 but BU held off the final point four straight times before Loyola finished the set 25-23.

In the second set, Butler won the first five points and didn't look back. The Bulldogs would lead 10-2 and soon extend the advantage to double digits. Butler's largest lead of the set came at 23-11 and moments later the Dawgs would clinch the set 25-14 on a kill by junior Rachel Barber.

After the break, Butler continued to roll, jumping out to an 11-4 lead. The Bulldogs grew the lead to double digits, leading 18-8 before winning seven of the final 10 points to take the set 25-11.

With the Dawgs now leading 2-1, the two teams battled in a closely-contested fourth set. The set included 10 ties, the last one coming at 18-18. A Loyola attack error and a kill by freshman Belle Obert would give Butler a 20-18 lead and force a Loyola timeout. At 20-19, the Bulldogs finished with a 5-0 run with Harbison serving to clinch the set 25-19 and win the match.

Butler's next match is Sunday, Oct. 9 vs. Green Bay at Hinkle Fieldhouse. First serve is at 4 p.m. The Indy Survivors will be Butler's special guests. Students in attendance can receive 10 Dawg Pound points.
