Butler def. Green Bay 25-21, 27-25, 25-21
INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler volleyball team capped off a great week at Hinkle Fieldhouse with a 3-0 win over Green Bay Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs are on a roll after home wins over Wright State, Loyola and Green Bay in a span of six days.
Senior Maureen Bamiro led the way with 17 kills (5.67 per set) on .452 hitting. Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by freshmen Brooke Ruffolo (21 digs) and Kelly Kyle (18 digs). Junior Gina Vera passed out 40 assists in addition to four digs, two blocks and three kills.
"I wanted to make sure I took advantage of breaking down their defense," Bamiro said. "I'm always calling 'Gina, Gina, Gina' and she gets me the ball. Things just seemed to flow right today."
Earlier in the week, the Dawgs snapped a four-match skid with a rout over Wright State. Since then, the Bulldogs have gotten back on track with the weekend's wins over Loyola and Green Bay.
"It was great to win three in a row at home, which is tough to do in the Horizon League," head coach Sharon Clark said. "It's huge for us and it's a huge confidence boost for us. This team has been working hard every day in practice and it's showing."
Green Bay had its chances in the second and third sets, but the Bulldogs stayed a step ahead in the first set. The Dawgs led 11-8 and after a timeout, traded points with the Phoenix until a pair of BU attack errors pulled Green Bay within 21-19. With Butler leading 22-20, the Bulldogs won three of the last four points to win the set 25-21.
Butler (8-12, 4-4) led 18-13 in the second set before Green Bay went on a long run to have set points at 24-23. Bamiro scored a kill to stave off the set point and an ace by freshman Stephanie Kranda gave BU set point at 25-24. At 25-25, the Dawgs got another Bamiro kill and a Green Bay error to clinch the set 27-25 and lead the match 2-0.
The two teams traded points in the third set until Butler made a decisive run late. With the set tied 17-17, the Bulldogs won four straight points with Ruffolo serving to lead 21-17. Green Bay crept to within 23-21 but a kill and an ace by sophomore Claire Randich finished the third set and clinched the Bulldog sweep.
Butler is on the road next week in northeast Ohio. BU plays at Youngstown State Friday, Oct. 14 and then at Cleveland State the next day.
