Dawgs Hold Off Green Bay In 5 Sets

Butler def. Green Bay 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 15-10

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Butler volleyball team won the first two sets and then rallied in the fifth set to defeat Green Bay 3-2 Thursday night at the Kress Center. The Bulldogs have now won eight of their last nine matches.

Freshman Belle Obert had a career-high 16 kills with 10 digs and eight blocks. It was her second career double-double and her first since the first weekend of the season. Senior Maureen Bamiro had 13 total blocks and freshman Brooke Ruffolo had 37 digs.

"Brooke had a slow start since she was recovering from an injury, but she was awesome down the stretch," head coach Sharon Clark said. "Belle and Mo Bamiro carried us at the net offensively and blocking. It was a battle between two good teams."

The Bulldogs stayed a step ahead of the Phoenix in each of the first two sets. Green Bay answered after falling behind 2-0 in the match, winning the third set 25-23. The fourth set was 20-20 when BU committed two attack errors to put Green Bay up 22-20. Green Bay went on to grab the set 25-21 to force a fifth set.

Butler stopped Green Bay's momentum by taking an early lead. An ace by junior Gina Vera came at a key time, giving BU an 8-5 lead. At 10-9, a big block and a Phoenix attack error put the Dawgs up 12-9. The Bulldogs would cruise over the next four points to clinch the road victory.

Brittany Groth had 25 digs for Green Bay, who had five different players rack up at least 11 digs. Abbey Gitter added 13 kills. The big difference in the match was Butler's superb blocking. BU, the Horizon League's leader in team blocks, had 15.5 blocks on the night.

Butler (13-13, 9-5) plays at Loyola Saturday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. ET. Two regular season matches remain, and the Bulldogs are two back in the loss column for second place in the league standings.
