Butler def. Loyola 25-19, 24-26, 25-23, 25-17
CHICAGO - Freshman Belle Obert had a career-high 21 kills with 11 digs to lead the Butler volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Loyola Saturday afternoon. Butler improved to 10-5 in league play and have now won nine of its last 10.
Sophomore Claire Randich added 13 kills on .391 hitting. Freshman libero Brooke Ruffolo led BU with 15 digs, while junior Gina Vera added 14 to go along with 46 assists. Vera also had five kills on .455 hitting.
Butler (14-13, 10-5) totaled 14.0 blocks, holding Loyola to .179 hitting. The Ramblers had just 6.0 blocks. The Bulldogs have out-blocked 11 of their last 12 opponents.
BU rolled in the first and fourth sets, and play was tight in the middle to sets. The Dawgs went on a big run in the first set to take control. The score was 9-9 when Butler ripped off six straight points to lead 15-9. The two teams traded points until Butler won the first set 25-19.
"We came through with some key plays at crucial times," said Butler head coach Sharon Clark. "And Belle had a great match offensively. She's playing with the wisdom of a much more experienced player."
Loyola and Butler went back and forth for two sets, with Loyola getting set No. 2 and Butler claiming the third one. In the final moments of the third set, senior Maureen Bamiro and freshman Stephanie Kranda combined for a pair of key blocks.
Butler took command of the fourth set to finish the afternoon. An early 4-1 run gave BU an 8-5 lead. Butler soon led 16-9 and would cruise to win the set 25-17. Kills by Obert and Bamiro were the clinching points.
Butler has just one match remaining in the regular season. BU is at Wright State Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. ET.
