Butler def. Wright State 25-23, 25-17, 17-25, 25-23
DAYTON, Ohio - The Butler volleyball team rolled past Wright State 3-1 Friday night at McLIn Gymnasium, clinching the No. 3 seed in next week's Horizon League Volleyball Championship. BU finished its 15-13 regular season with an 11-5 mark in league play.
Senior Maureen Bamiro led BU with 16 kills on .393 with five blocks. Freshman Belle Obert had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Claire Randich added a team-high six blocks for Butler, which is the Horizon League's leading blocking team.
"Maureen was unstoppable tonight and we got great offense from Belle," head coach Sharon Clark said. "We will use the momentum of winning 10 of our last 11 matches going into the conference tournament next weekend."
The Bulldogs edged Wright State in the first set and actually trailed WSU 22-20 at one point. Butler finished with a 5-1 run to win the set 25-23.
The Dawgs punished WSU in the second set 25-17. It was 5-5 early in the set when BU went on a run to lead 12-7. Up 16-13, Butler won three straight points to lead 19-13. From there, the Bulldogs would cruise to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After dropping a set to Wright State (6-23, 5-11), Butler edged the Raiders in the fourth set 25-23 to clinch the road victory. WSU led the set 10-6 but after a Butler timeout, the Bulldogs methodically climbed back. The set was soon 15-15 and would later be tied 21-21. Butler got the next two points, prompting Wright State to call a timeout. WSU answered with the next two points, tying the set at 23-23. After a Butler timeout, the Dawgs got the final two points to clinch the win.
Butler will be the No. 3 seed in the 2011 Horizon League Volleyball Championship next weekend in Milwaukee. BU will take on either Green Bay or UIC in the first round.
