PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior Maureen Bamiro was one of six players named to the all-tournament team at the University of Portland Classic this weekend. The 6-2 middle blocker had 16 blocks over the four matches, good for 1.14 blocks per set.
Bamiro, a native of Kalamazoo, Mich., was the lone Bulldog honored after the Bulldogs' 4-match trip to the Pacific Northwest. She averaged 2.43 kills per set. Facing some elite outside hitters, Bamiro averaged 1.14 blocks per set, totaling four solo blocks and 12 block assists.
Bamiro, an AVCA All-Midwest Region player a year ago, had nine total blocks vs. Washington State on Saturday, more than the three previous matches combined. She had 12 kills and four blocks in the tourney opener at Portland and had 10 kills and three blocks in BU's win over Nevada.
"Maureen is getting her blocking form back from last season," head coach Sharon Clark said. "She had great performances blocking against formidable hitters from Washington State and Texas A&M.
"She was a force at the net this weekend."
BU finished the swing with a deceptive 1-3 record, facing top competition outside the Midwest region. Butler defeated Nevada on Friday, but had losses to Texas A&M, Washington State and Portland.
Butler (1-6) will host its home opener Tuesday, Sept. 6 when Chicago State comes to Hinkle Fieldhouse. Tuesday's first serve is at 7 p.m. It's Tailgate Tuesday, with free food available to students at Hinkle. There are special discounts available for Twitter followers of @ButlerVB or @HinkTheBUDog.
