The victory was the Bulldogs' first of the 2012 season. BU is set to finish play at the DePaul Invitational against the host Blue Demons late Saturday night.
Obert totaled 12 kills and 11 digs while Peterson dished 32 assists with 15 digs and five blocks. Butler had a huge advantage at the net, owning a 15.0-6.0 advantage in team blocks. Butler's strong blocking forced Eastern Illinois into .108 hitting. Junior Claire Randich and sophomore Erica Stahl each had a hand in six blocks while senior Rachel Barber and junior Maggie Harbison added three each. Barber also tallied 10 kills.
Butler dominated the first and third sets, opening with a 25-19 win and closing the sweep with a 25-17 win. It was the middle of the match that was interesting.
The second set was a 32-30 marathon. Butler fought off set point five times before pulling out the set win. BU was up 7-3 early, but a 7-3 run by the Panthers made it 10-10. Soon, four straight points by EIU would make it 15-13. Butler would score twice to tie it at 15-15.
Later, with Butler trailing 22-19, Butler used a 4-1 run to tie the set 23-23. After an Eastern Illinois timeout, the Panthers scored to set up set point. The Dawgs then scored twice to go up 25-24 and set up a set point of their own. The teams traded points until EIU held a 30-29 lead. Butler finished with a flurry, as Obert had a solo block and a kill to put BU up 31-30. Stahl finished the set with a kill.
An 8-2 run midway through the third set erased an early deficit and Butler cruised to finish the 3-0 win. A solo block by Harbison was the final point.
Butler's match vs. DePaul is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
