BU Falls At Pitt

PITTSBURGH - The Butler volleyball team lost two close sets in a 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday night. The Bulldogs finished the weekend 2-1, leaving Pittsburgh with wins over Howard and Coastal Carolina.

Junior Morgan Peterson had 32 assists in the three sets while also adding six digs and three blocks. She was named to the all-tournament team, along with junior Maggie Harbison, who posted 10 kills and seven digs. Senior Rachel Barber led BU with 12 kills on .312 hitting.

"We lost a very tough and well-fought battle," head coach Sharon Clark said.

After losing 25-17 in the first set, Butler jumped out to an early 11-7 lead in the second set. Later, a block by Harbison and junior Claire Randich would put Butler ahead 15-10. Butler led 23-18 and appeared to be in control before Pitt made a comeback. Three kills by Kate Yeazel made it 23-23. Barber had a kill to give Butler set point at 24-23. At 24-24, Butler made two mistakes and Pitt took the set 26-24.

"We played hard tonight but we need to find our discipline down the stretch in tough matches," Clark said.

The third set was another close one, with Pitt holding on for a 28-26 win. The Bulldogs were in it throughout, and the set was eventually tied at 23. Pittsburgh then had set point, but an attack error kept BU alive at 24-24. The two teams traded points and a kill by Peterson made it 26-26. Pitt's Alexa Campbell smacked two kills to finish the set and clinch the win for the Panthers.

Yeazel led Pittsburgh with 14 kills on .545 hitting. Lindsey Zitzke had 40 assists, seven digs and three blocks. Jasmine Dittrich had eight kills and was named tourney MVP.

Butler (4-2) will play at home this week, hosting the Butler Classic. Western Illinois, Stephen F. Austin and Indiana will come to Hinkle Fieldhouse Sept. 7-8.
