INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Maggie Harbison had team highs of 18 kills and 19 digs to lead the Butler volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Western Illinois on Friday afternoon. The match was the opener of the four-team Butler Classic at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
In a hot gym full of children in attendance, the Bulldogs won two close sets to go up 2-0 before WIU won the third set. Butler jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth to make the deciding set a quick one.
"We depended on Maggie for everything today," head coach Sharon Clark said. "To have a double-double with almost 20 kills and digs is tough to do. I'm very proud of her."
The Bulldogs had edges in aces (8-3), hitting percentage (.201 - .153) and blocks (12-6). Butler moved to 6-1 when recording more blocks than its opponent.
"We had some key blocks at the right times," Clark said. "Lately, we've blocks lots of balls. Today, we might not have blocked as many, but we got blocks at the right time."
WIU (3-4) was led by Samantha Fournier with 17 kills and 11 digs. Sarah Fetter had 45 assists, as Western Illinois actually had a 54-49 edge in kills over BU. Katie Hosteng added 16 kills.
The win put Butler at 6-2 heading into a Friday night showdown against Stephen F. Austin at Hinkle Fieldhouse. SFA had played Indiana earlier in the day's afternoon match.
